How to talk to your partner about premature ejaculation
What to say, when to say it, and what partners usually want to hear.
Written and clinically reviewed by Vanessa Cushing, LPC, NCC, MS — AASECT-Certified Sex Therapist, licensed in Virginia & Florida. The Cushing Counseling team covers Virginia, DC, Maryland & Florida.
The short answer
Choose a calm moment outside the bedroom, say it plainly, and make it a shared project. Something like "I've noticed I finish faster than I'd like, and I want to work on it — with you." Most partners feel relief, because silence and avoidance usually hurt the relationship more than the timing does.

Why silence backfires
Many men cope with PE by avoiding sex or rushing past it. Partners often read that as lost interest, or blame themselves. Naming the issue clears up those stories.
Words that help
- "I want to tell you about something I've been embarrassed about."
- "This isn't about you. I want sex to feel good for both of us."
- "Would you be open to trying some exercises with me?"
- "What would make sex feel better for you right now?"
If you are the partner
Curiosity and warmth go further than reassurance alone. Ask what would help, focus on pleasure beyond penetration, and avoid jokes about timing, even gentle ones.
Frequently asked questions
Should we come to therapy together?
It often helps. Some men start alone and invite their partner later — both work.
What if my partner is upset?
Frustration usually comes from feeling shut out. A therapist can help you both talk without blame.
Can I do this therapy online?
Yes. Sex therapy is talk therapy plus private exercises at home, so it works well by secure video. Vanessa and the team see clients in Virginia, Maryland, Washington, DC and Florida, and Dr. Elizabeth Wolfe sees clients online in 43 PSYPACT states.
