The short answer

Sex therapy can help many men gain real control and enjoy sex more, though "cure" depends on the type of PE. Acquired PE linked to anxiety or relationship stress often improves a great deal. Lifelong PE may need ongoing skills, and sometimes medical treatment alongside therapy works best.

What sessions involve

  • Talking only — there is never any physical contact or examination.
  • Understanding your pattern: lifelong or acquired, triggers, and history.
  • Home exercises such as start-stop, squeeze and sensate focus.
  • Work on anxiety, shame and communication with a partner.

Therapy and medical care together

A physician may discuss medical options such as numbing creams or sprays and certain prescription medications. We do not prescribe or recommend specific drugs. For some men, medical treatment plus therapy works better than either alone — therapy helps the gains last.

A better goal than "cure"

The aim is not a stopwatch number. It is feeling in control, less anxious and more connected — and enjoying sex again.

Frequently asked questions

How many sessions will I need?

It varies. Your therapist will talk with you about a realistic plan after the first few sessions.

Is sex therapy covered by insurance?

We are out-of-network and provide superbills on request. See our Fees page for details.

Can I do this therapy online?

Yes. Sex therapy is talk therapy plus private exercises at home, so it works well by secure video. Vanessa and the team see clients in Virginia, Maryland, Washington, DC and Florida, and Dr. Elizabeth Wolfe sees clients online in 43 PSYPACT states.
