Online Sex Therapy Anywhere in Florida
Miami to the Keys, Tampa to Jacksonville — how video sessions work, and why this particular kind of therapy suits them.
Written and clinically reviewed by Vanessa Cushing, LPC, NCC, MS — AASECT-Certified Sex Therapist, licensed in Virginia, DC, Maryland & Florida.
The short answer
Online sex therapy in Florida works the same way as in-person: assessment, a formulation of what is maintaining the problem, and structured exercises practised privately at home. The only legal requirement is that you are physically located in Florida during the session, because therapy licences are state-based rather than tied to where the therapist sits.
Why video suits sex therapy specifically
Some therapy loses something over video. This one mostly does not, for a structural reason: the treatment happens at home. Sensate focus and the other graded exercises that do the actual work are practised privately between sessions, and the session is where you plan them and report back. That conversation travels fine.
There is a second, less obvious advantage. The hardest part of sex therapy is usually the first sentence, and a lot of people can say it from their own sofa who could not say it in a waiting room they had to walk through first.
What the licence actually covers
A therapy licence is granted by a state and covers clients physically located in that state at the time of the appointment. Florida is covered here, along with Virginia, Washington, D.C. and Maryland.
So Fort Lauderdale, Naples, Sarasota, Orlando, Tampa, Jacksonville, Gainesville, Key West and everywhere between are all straightforward. Travel out of state and the session needs to move — which for anyone who splits the year between Florida and the Northeast is worth mentioning at intake rather than discovering in December.
Making it private at home
- Headphones are the single biggest improvement. They remove half the room from the conversation.
- A parked car is a legitimate therapy office and a lot of people use one.
- For couples sessions, sit side by side in one frame rather than in two rooms — the therapist needs to see what happens between you.
- Take the session somewhere with a door if the subject matter would be difficult to be overheard discussing.
What it does not replace
Video does not replace a physical examination. Where a sexual difficulty has a medical dimension — pain, a gradual and consistent erectile change, a suspected medication effect, a hormonal question — that piece belongs with a physician you see in person, and the therapy runs alongside it rather than instead of it.
Frequently asked questions
Is online sex therapy as effective as in person?
For this kind of work the format matters less than most people expect, because the exercises are done at home either way. What makes the difference is the specificity of the clinician's training, not whether you are in the room.
I live outside Miami. Can I still be seen?
Yes — anywhere in Florida. Certified sex therapists are thin on the ground outside the largest metros, which is why much of the practice's Florida caseload is by video.
What if I travel out of state?
Sessions can continue while you are in Virginia, D.C. or Maryland. Elsewhere they have to pause until you are back in a covered state. Flag your travel at intake and it can be planned around.
