Jennifer Fuller, LMFT, couples and relationship therapist at Cushing Counseling

You don't have to explain yourself

You shouldn't have to spend your first few sessions educating your therapist about your relationship structure, identity or community. We start with the challenges you're facing — not with defending who you are or how you love.

Honest, not harsh

I'll tell you what I think, in a way that lets you act on it. Direct, thoughtful and grounded in compassion — the conversations that matter, without shame, blame or unnecessary sugarcoating.

Built around relationship complexity

Not a general practice with a few polyamorous or kink-aware clients. My work is built for adults navigating relationship complexity, so you're working with someone who already understands your world.

Her story

The person behind the work

Jennifer is a Licensed Marriage and Family Therapist with nearly 10 years in practice — in community mental health since 2019 and private practice since 2022. She studied psychology at Wingate University, with a minor in communication focused on how people actually talk to each other: interpersonal, intercultural and nonverbal. Her Master's in Marriage and Family Therapy is from Converse University, where she completed over 500 hours of direct client contact, more than half of it relational work with couples and families, including time at a low-income community clinic and a county jail.

Early in her career she worked at a group practice known for serving the LGBTQ+ community, and naturally began working with queer couples, polyamorous clients and people exploring non-traditional relationship structures. What she noticed: most clients weren't looking for someone to tell them whether their relationships were right or wrong. They wanted someone who understood them well enough that they didn't have to start every session defending or explaining their lives.

Her job isn't to tell you what your relationship should look like — it's to help you understand yourself, communicate more honestly and build relationships that reflect your values instead of someone else's expectations. Her approach is honest, not harsh: she'll tell you what she thinks in a way you can act on, without shame, blame or unnecessary sugarcoating.

Clients describe her as calm, direct and easy to talk to. She'll challenge you when it serves you, never with judgment, and believes therapy should be both thoughtful and practical — insight that keeps working after the session ends. Her work is grounded in relational and family-systems therapy, so she looks at the whole relationship system, not just one person in it.

How she works

Her work is grounded in relational therapy, which means looking at the full relationship system. Depending on what brings you in, she may integrate:

Relational Therapy

Relationships don't exist in isolation. We look at how your experiences, patterns and connections shape what you're facing today.

Family Systems Therapy

How we communicate, handle conflict and relate is often shaped by the relationships we grew up in. Seeing those patterns lets you respond on purpose instead of on autopilot.

Attachment-Informed Therapy

Understanding how you bond, reach for and pull away from the people you love.

Solution-Focused & Strengths-Based

Practical, forward-looking work built on what is already working for you.

Frequently asked questions

Do I have to explain polyamory or kink to her first?

No. Jennifer's work is built specifically around polyamorous, non-monogamous, kink-involved and LGBTQ+ relationships, so sessions start with what you're facing, not with educating your therapist.

Will she tell me whether my relationship is right or wrong?

No. Her job isn't to tell you what your relationship should look like — it's to help you understand yourself, communicate more honestly and build relationships that reflect your values.

Can all my partners come to sessions?

Yes — she works with individuals, couples and relationships with more than two people, including boundary and agreement work for open and polyamorous relationships.

Where can she see clients?

By secure video for clients located in Virginia or South Carolina. Her Maryland licence is in progress.
